Horicon Habitat Hike
A two mile hiking trail, near the foot of Conservation Hill (North end of Palmatory St.) is a wonderful hike that takes you back to nature in a delightful walk through a forest, then on to the Marsh for a close up look at what has evolved.

Trails are open seven days a week from dawn till dusk, year round, except certain areas during nesting and hunting seasons.

The view from Conservation Hill is breathtaking. At dawn you might hear the clarion call of the Sandhill Crane.

As the sun sets, it’s a front row seat from which to watch the waterfowl and nesting birds return for the night.

Horicon Marsh

The 32,000 acre marsh is a legacy of the Ice Age. It began as a lake gouged out by glaciers pushing their way southward. Today it is a refuge for wildlife, a part of the National Ice Age Reserve. Lush grasslands and miles of waterways shelter waterfowl and songbirds, muskrats, fish, deer and a variety of upland game. It is probably best known as a rest stop for over 200,000 migrating Canada geese every spring and fall.

Along with hiking, hunting and fishing are among many of the things one can do on the Horicon Marsh. You can also study the wildlife from the water in a boat or canoe. Four-mile Island is a protected area for nesting Herons and Egrets that quiet observers will find fascinating.
